Good pop music is a dying art...that's why I have to root for a
band like Nada Surf bad...really bad. They are one of the few bands
still around that I find extremely pleasing to listen to.
Nada Surf are a three piece with beautiful guitars and melodies,
great complentary bass riffs, and steady, solid drumming. Their
style is a mix of 60's pop rock (Beatles, Kinks) and 90's indie
rock (Pavement, Pixies).
The melodies are what set this band apart. Lead singer/guitarist Matthew Caws writes bubbling, toe tapping tunes
that reverberate in your head for weeks. He can also come at you with brooding slower paced songs,
packed with raw emotions.
Nada Surf are unfortunately best known for their 1996 hit "Popular".
While this song may have made them minor celebrities, it's now in
the past where it appears it will eternally stay. They don't even
play "Popular" at their live shows anymore, and in my opinion are
better for it, by weeding out the fans who jumped on for the one
hit wonder ride.
I've seen them live twice now, in Albany and Syracuse, and both
shows were excellent. These guys know how to put on a live show.
They usually have a couple of stories to tell during the course
of the night, and once the show is over you can walk up to them
and say a few words about the show or buy them a beer without getting
any pompous rock star attitude.
If you get a chance, check out their LPs - High/Low, The
Proximity Effect, and Let Go.
Some of their song highlights
include: Stalemate, Bacardi, Mother's Day, Bad Best Friend,
Slow Down, Blizzard of '77, Inside of Love, and Killian's
Red.
